Warning - You soon won't be able to send emails unless you make a simple change to your email program's settings |
|
To further protect you from nuisance emails (spam), we've changed the way our email service works in order to stop emails being sent anonymously.
To continue sending emails, you'll need to switch on SMTP authentication in your email program on each computer you use.
How do I switch on SMTP authentication?
It's simple. SMTP authentication is usually switched on by ticking a box called 'My server requires authentication' in your email program's settings.
You'll need to do this for all the BT Yahoo! email addresses that you and your family use.

Frequently Asked Questions |
| |
What is 'SMTP authentication' and why do I need to switch it on?
To reduce junk email (spam), all email providers are switching to what is known as SMTP authentication. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, which enables the sending of email. Authentication is a method of identifying the origin of emails that stops emails being sent anonymously.
Most nuisance emails (spam) are sent from people on unauthenticated email. By rejecting emails sent without authentication, spam will be substantially reduced.
In a few days time, BT Yahoo! Mail will require all emails to be authenticated. By switching on SMTP authentication now, you will be able to continue sending emails.
What difference will I notice after switching it on?
Probably none (except a reduction in spam). You will continue to be able to send and receive emails in the normal way.
What if I use webmail?
When you use webmail on BT Yahoo!, SMTP authentication takes place automatically. But if you or any member of your family ever uses an email program such as Outlook Express, Eudora or MacMail, then SMTP authentication will need to be switched on in that program.
